If you have only a couple days and want to see the essence of Alaska, away from its three major cities, spend a day meandering through its interior by train. This 12-hour run took me from Anchorage to Fairbanks, and passed by Denali National Park, home of Mount McKinley (Denali), the highest mountain peak in North America.
Denali is frequently obscured by clouds, and many a tourist has gone home disappointed without ever getting a glimpse. We were lucky to see it peeking out from above the clouds (next two pictures) on both the north and the south sides.
Mary: I was thinking of you as we spent hours riding through the Alaska Range. This is a definite must-do for mountain lovers like you!
