Feral horses aren't the only thing Pony Island (Shackleford Banks, North Carolina) is known for. I have never seen so many jumbo sea shells on one beach. Shelling is allowed and encouraged here; I brought home several conch shells that were 8-9 inches long. Gorgeous!

Seeing the world through Basia's eyes is a terrific gift in my life. Thanks, Basia.

Is it because there is no developmemt around the island that allows the shells to get so big?? I never thought to relate them to flowers! Now I'll never look at shells the same way again!!

Shannon: Yes indeed, they are as photogenic as flowers...
Sharon: I was wondering the same thing, haven't been able to find an answer to that. But apparently the coast of North Carolina has some of the best beaches for shelling. Happy to know that I'm helping you see seashells in a new way....:o)

Wow! The horses were OK, but I wasn't packing my bags. The sea shells are something else. I need directions to this island. Can you part with one for my Christmas present?

DonnaK: It's yours. Wooo hooo, Christmas shopping done....;o)
Directions: Drive 10 hours to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, take a 40-minute ferry from Cape Hatteras to Ocracoke Island; then take a 2-hour ferry from Ocracoke Island to Cedar Island, then a 15 minute ferry from Beaufort to Pony Island. Though it might be simpler if you're coming from your neck of the woods (the south) rather than from the north.

Thanks for the seashell photos. I am reminded of how much fun it is to choose "just the right one". It's a kind of meditation. All the worldly problems disappear for the moment while I'm having my treasure hunt to find the perfect one!

Tereska: It is kind of like meditation. I can spend hours doing it.
