On Baratang Island, the island that was the destination for my eventful bus ride, it was all about textures.
This silky smooth mud volcano (a vent in the earth which emits gas and mud) first erupted shortly after the tsunami. It has been oozing ever since.

In addition to the crab circles I wrote about earlier, Baludera Beach was filled with white and golden coral.
At the airport the next day, I watched as customs officials confiscated these irresistible souvenirs from one tourist after another, trying to bring home a bit of the islands.
A 30-minute speedboat (below) ride through mangrove forests, followed by a 15-minute trek through villages and forests, brought us to a beautiful, cool, limestone cave.
