Human orphanages aren't the only kind of orphanage I visited in Sri Lanka. One of my most delightful visits was to the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage in central Sri Lanka. The government-run orphanage is home to some 60 rescued Asian elephants. Some are babies who have lost their mothers. Others are adults who have become separated from their herd or are wounded and unable to take care of themselves. Twice a day, they are led, unrestrained, through the town for a dip in the Maha Oya river, where they enjoy 4 hours of bathing daily.
It's an amazing sight to watch dozens of these amazing creatures bathing and frolicking in the water. I had a hard time tearing myself away from this scene - I took almost 100 photographs in the space of a couple hours!

Hi Rekha,
I don't know the address of the orphanage, but in the link above there is a contact address, which is: Jayantha Jayewardene, Biodiversity and Elephant Conservation Trust, 615/32 Rajagiriya Gardens, Nawala Road, Rajagiriya, Sri Lanka; fax to 011-94-(0)75-337142; e-mail to romalijj@slt.lk. I've never heard of the elephant orphanage in Kerala - is there one?

jadedragon: I'm not affiliated with this or any other elephant/wildlife organization, so I don't have any information on this for you. I just take pictures!
