Living room.
One of the things I love about Indian houses is the shiny marble floors; they are very common here, and very cool to walk around on, barefoot, on a hot day. I'm guessing marble must be much cheaper here than in the U.S., 'cause I see it everywhere. | |
| The kitchen is a modern Western-style kitchen. The counter tops are made of granite, which is another material that is common here. | |

View of balcony from dining area. This is what I see when I sit at the dining table and eat breakfast each morning. |
| View of the beach from the balcony. The beach is called "Breezy Beach." It's not as crowded as the main beach in Chennai. But on weekends, there are quite a few people hanging out. | |
| My bedroom. Each of the bedrooms has a view of the ocean, lots of built-in storage, and the same beautiful marble floors. |
In the U.S., a place like this, with beach view, would be outrageously out of my price range. Here, it costs about the same as the mortgage payments on my house in Rochester.

"Any chance you will publish some recipes? This sounded so good that I called a friend to have lunch at Thali today!" --Clare
See, Shalini's food is so persuasive, it even has the power to convert you long distance! Unfortunately, she doesn't do the recipe thing - she's one of those people who pulls seemingly unrelated items out of the fridge, pops them in the grinder/blender/microwave or whatever, waves a magic wand, and out comes a nutritious meal.

"That dish looks yummy. You are a very lucky to have such a great cook for a roommate. I went to the Lilac Festival this year and--after looking hungrily at all your pics of Indian food over the months--bought some Indian dishes from one of the booths. Had some yellow rice with veggies, and little fried pockets containing potatoes and peas. Delicious. And I owe it all to you." --Dale
You're welcome, I will take full credit where none is due....

Shhhhhhh...don't anybody tell her about my Dunkin' Donuts addiction, ok?....or she'll have me weaned off those too! :o)

Wow... not bad for an apartment! Great furniture and built-ins, and a very nice layout.

Basia,
Been away from your Blog for awhile. Boy, a lot has been happening. The new place looks great... and on the water!
As I read your Blog, I am reminded of my trip to Goa and Mumbai just over 18 months ago. It was so beautiful and sad at the same time.
Thinking of you here.

I would die for a marble floor and a granite tabletop (or a rock structure of any kind). That is my kind of place! And I can't believe the ocean views you have--who did you guys bribe?
Yes, I would bet your photos and descriptions of Indian dishes have sent many of us out to patronize Indian restuarants. Between Clare, myself, and others, the impact of your blog on the success of local Indian businesses must be very significant.

I can attest that Basia's addiction goes back as far as 1973...the first year I met her...that's 31 years ago!! And it probably started WAY before than...it was so bad she actually worked there on overnight shifts! And she'd toss out anyone who came in to bother her customers!! She was always brave, adventurous and unstoppable...I think it's the DONUTS!! sharon
